Types of Mountains

I was so excited to win a set of these materials from Montessori Print Shop last week and have been looking forward to introducing them with the munchkins.

Here is the link to where you can purchase a copy.

I really like this set and the detail it goes into about each type. I also really appreciated the page on the
importance of mountains- it really helped with the whole "why are we doing this?" question Bear asks most days.

I had originally introduced all of the pictures at once and it may have been a little bit overwhelming. We are going to narrow it to types of mountains in North America and than go continent by continent instead of by type. Or just show one of each and add as we go...still figuring that out...

We used playdough to make models of some of the mountains in North America. I made some brown (added cocoa powder) green (food coloring) and left one white. I also put out some coconut, whole nutmeg, ground kelp, and some seeds. I was hoping that they would get used to add detail to the mountains.

The hit of the afternoon was doing Mount St. Helens.

I put out some baking powder and vinegar (which I dyed red) to make a volcanic eruption. Bear used a spoon and a dropper to put the materials in the hole in our mountain.

We finally put up some of the mountains by where they are in the World on our World Map

All in all it was a fun introduction.
