Mini Ocean Unit

We don't normally plan to do unit studies but sometimes they just kindof happen (like with our cloud unit a couple of months ago). This unit on oceans came about the same way.

We started with some really fun books on Oceans:

Hooray for Fish by Lucy Cousins
A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle
Into the A, B, Sea by Deborah Lee Rose
Over in the Ocean by Marianne Berkes

Montessori Helper has some really nice printables on sale for $0.10 for World Oceans Day (June 8th). I was super excited to see this available for a really great price!

We even got to visit the Pacific on our trip to Portland a couple of weeks ago.

I pulled some sea animals (ocean Toob- michaels, amazon) from our Geography boxes and made a fun Sensory Box with water beads (dollar store) and a bin (dollar store):

I put in an empty container which the kids used to identify each animal and put it back. I even added some land animals which they thought was pretty funny!

"Those don't belong in there! That's a chicken!"

Gotta keep them on their toes :)

Our final activity was Pin Pushing/Pricking a coloring page of an Octopus. I used a mouse pad underneath, jumbo push pin (Walmart clearance) and cookie sheet. The printer paper was a little large for the pad but the kids seemed to move it around fine- I might recommend some type of thicker board so they don't have to move the pad underneath so much.

Happy Schooling!
