We are working our way through all the systems of the body and up next is the Circulatory System.
Here are some of the resources we are using:
Human Heart Nomenclature Cards from Montessori Print. These are beautiful and I was really surprised how quickly my son picked up on the terms.
Label and Color the Human Heart from Science with Me (free activities at the top of the homepage)
Field Trip to our Local Nature and Science Museum.
Video of a Normal Heart pumping Blood by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Another Video with a good view of the back.
Our General Outline:
We visited the museum a week or so ago to see the heart in action. It was really really cool. I think that this got the kids a little more excited about learning the parts. They had an amazing area where the kids could feel their own heartbeat using a stethoscope and a speaker.
Next I introduced the nomenclature cards. We put them in order based on the blood flow through the heart.
*update: to make this easier, we split the left and right side up. we did the right side of the heart first (the blue) and the next day we worked on the left side (red). The day after we did the pericardium and the myocardium. It's a lot so take your time :)

We also took the diagram and colored it based on the nomenclature cards to reinforce the concept of blood flow through the heart.
Later this week I'll have a hands on activity- so check back with us for that! My son has been planning on how to make a model of a heart with blood. Not sure how that is going to play out but.... I'm sure it will be interesting.
Love this post! Can't wait to get my hands on those nomenclature cards. How old is your son? You should check out Gentle Revolution's Bit of Intelligence Human Organs cards. AMAZING. (You can see an image in this post I wrote up a while back!)....Enjoy!!
ReplyDeleteHi Marnie, my son is 5. I'll have to take a look at the organ cards. They look really great! Thanks so much for your comment.
