Color Mixing

Color Mixing is easily one of our favorite activities! This is a good variation we tried out this afternoon:

Materials:
Food Colors (the closer to primary the better)
Milk (Non-Dairy also works if that's all you have on hand)
Color Tray (you can use a regular shallow dish or an ice cube tray)
Sponge
Dropper
Water
Q-tips
Mat/Tray
Name cards for your colors

Put Milk in the Center. Place a drop of food coloring around the outside. Add water to dilute a bit if desired.

The idea is to use the dropper to mix different colors to find out what colors they make. The primary colors are good ones to start off with (red, blue, yellow) to make the secondary colors (green, orange, violet).  Be sure to use your label cards to identify what colors you made.

The milk makes a beautiful effect when swirled.

We were inspired to use the q-tips to paint with our new colors:

  1. Great idea ... I always love variations of color mixing! There are great activities for eye-hand coordination here, too! I featured your post at the Living Montessori Now Facebook page and pinned it to my DIY Sensorial Extensions Pinterest Board at http://pinterest.com/debchitwood/diy-sensorial-extensions/
